Mokai Station has 3 accommodation options and are based primarily around traditional back country Huts and camping options. This is back to basics hunting that is comfortable and provides all the amenities necessary to have a great time hunting.
Mokai Station is in the heartland of New Zealand Central North Island back country. Nestled at the foot of the Ruahini Ranges and where the native beach Forest breaks out on to the station farmland sits Mokai Hut which is our main base while hunting on Mokai Station
Originally built in the late 1950’s to accommodate Deer Culling Operations the Mokai Hut was upgraded by the owners in 2015. It accommodates 4 hunters in comfortable bunks , has an amazing open fireplace for heating and cooking and relatively easy access by 4WD is possible at most times during the year, otherwise we get you in there on a Can Am or helicopter. We often have deer accessible from the front balcony and regularly are bumping deer within 100m of the hut.
Mokai Hut gives us good access to hunting areas that boarder the farm land which is great when the higher country is closed in and then a 40min trip up the farm tracks gets us up to the tussock country that leads into the Ruahini itself.
MIRICLE ( JOES ) HUT
Built to accommodate Deer Cullers in the early 1940’s this Hut
is located at the farthest reaches of the station and is set up to accommodate 3 Hunters. Based around the original old Tent Camp it is located with extensive views back over towards Mt Ruapehu and is located in the heart of the prime high country hunting area.
Built by Joe Corpe, owner of Mokai Station who sadly passed away in 2016 it was set up specifically for hunting and any high country mustering that was required in the area. The hut is basic but gets us back to the origins of hunting in the area. It has a camp stove/gas cooking, a meat safe and is practical and comfortable and most importantly right where we need to be when those Big Stags start roaring up.
We have a Heli Pad set up and will often set up additional accommodation by way of Tents and will fly clients in by arrangement.
Access is primarily by foot and we will hunt our way in from Mokai Hut in most cases. The area surrounding Joes Hut is truly spectacular and is to be seen to be believed !
Mokai Shearers quarters were recently refurbished and will accommodate larger parties of up to 8 People. Often used when families are brought in, it offers a more homely feel along with a spa, great deck with views and is about a 40min drive into Taihape if some of our guests wish to head into town or sightseeing while the Hunters are in the back country.
